A Blog Glow Up

Did y’all notice anything different around here? The blog got itself a big ol’ glow-up over the weekend. I’m still on the fence about it—change and I aren’t exactly best friends. But sometimes, you just can’t dodge it.

If you run a blog long enough, you learn a hard truth: sooner or later, something’s gonna break.

At first, it’s little stuff. My Instagram feed quit updating—not a crisis. The pictures still looked nice, so I ignored it. Then it vanished completely. Annoying, but manageable.

What I couldn’t ignore? The email notifications going haywire. (I’m so sorry about that, y’all!) I was writing, but no one was seeing it. My readers were dropping off like autumn leaves, and that’s when I knew: this wasn’t just a tweak situation. It was time for a full upgrade.

So, a few months back, I made a plan. I chose EmPress for a new theme—something fresh but still homey, like the old one I loved. After some input (and a lot of back-and-forth), I settled on a look. Deleted the old theme. Installed something simple to handle the WordPress upgrades. Then I spent an entire day putting in the shiny new one.

That part? Easy.

The hard part was diving into the backend, updating the database, and wrangling those stubborn email issues. After some sweat, a few tears, and maybe a muttered word or two, I finally got it done.

Everything on the new site is functional again—and while I do miss the familiar face of the old theme (we went through nearly five years of growth and life changes together), this fresh look feels like turning the page.

It’s not a perfect blog glow up—there are still a few kinks to iron out—but it’s nice to know that, just like me, this blog can weather change and come out a little brighter on the other side.

And maybe that’s the thing about change: it doesn’t have to feel comfortable right away to be the right move. Just like a new pair of boots, it takes a little breaking in before it feels like home.
