Snoopy’s

A few weeks ago, Belle and I made our way up to NC State to record a podcast. We wrapped up around lunchtime, and y’all — we were starving.

Now, you know me. A chain restaurant was never going to cut it. Not when I’m sitting in the middle of Raleigh, hungry and craving something that tastes like small-town NC. So when we drove past a Raising Cane’s, and I caught a whiff of something far more promising down the road, the decision practically made itself.

We went straight to Snoopy’s.

If you grew up around Raleigh, Snoopy’s doesn’t need an introduction. But for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure — let me tell you about it.

Back in 1978, Raleigh native Steve Webb took an old gas station on the corner of Wake Forest Road and Whitaker Mill Road and turned it into an eastern North Carolina grill. No frills. No fanfare. Just good food. The kind that doesn’t ask much of you except that you show up hungry.

That original location is still there, complete with its walk-up window and iconic marquee sign that’s been making Raleigh drivers smile for decades. Snoopy’s has grown to five locations across Raleigh and Garner since then, including the one on Hillsborough Street near campus — which is exactly where Belle and I ended up.

The menu is simple, and it means business.

Hot dogs and cheeseburgers come the Snoopy’s way: mustard, onions, and chili, steamed in the bun. That’s eastern North Carolina tradition, and they don’t deviate from it unless you ask them to. There’s also homemade chicken salad, made-from-scratch vegetable beef soup, crinkle-cut fries, onion rings, barbecue sandwiches, and root beer floats.

And y’all — it hit the spot.

Belle and I both got a hot dog and fries. Okay, I got two. Don’t judge me, but I ate every last bite.

No apologies. That meal was the perfect ending to a morning spent talking into a microphone. Just good, simple food. The kind that reminds you why you love North Carolina.

There’s a reason Snoopy’s has been around for nearly fifty years. It’s not because of a marketing budget or a loyalty app. It’s because somebody made something honest and kept making it the same way. Generation after generation of NC State students have grown up eating there. Raleigh folks have been pulling into that little parking lot since before most of us were born.

That’s not a trend. That’s a tradition.

If you find yourself in Raleigh and you’re hungry, skip the chain on the corner. Find the nearest Snoopy’s. Get yourself a hot dog with mustard, onions, and chili on a steamed bun.

You can thank me later.

Hey there! I’m Cassie Clark, a Carolina girl who grew up in two towns on opposite sides of North Carolina. My family has lived here for 8 generations, so my love for my home state is something I got honest. I’m passionate about sharing all the things that make North Carolina living so sweet – the history, the great outdoors, the culture, and the laidback lifestyle. That’s what Where the Dogwood Blooms is all about. It’s my love song to life in the Old North State; an ode to sunshine & hurricanes.
