Burnt Slap Up

I had so much fun on Jones Lake yesterday. My skin did not. I don’t know if y’all can tell from the picture, but I was a bit pink an hour in. By the time we made it home, my face was puffy, sore, and roughly the color of steamed lobster. When I looked in the mirror this morning, I thought: I got burnt slap up. And I did – my face is fried.

Mamaw used to refer to things as being burnt slap up. From sunburns to food, the expression works on just about anything. She even used it to describe fevers. Papaw and Daddy often used the term to describe motors, wiring, and other mechanics.

Brandon uses the less common, burnt slam up. Tomayto, tomahto. Both phrases mean the same thing; thoroughly burnt.

Which way do you say it? Slap or slam?
