“There’s no such thing as natural beauty.”
-Truvy Jones
Like most Southern women, I have a full-blown obsession with Steel Magnolias. Funny, dramatic, and heartfelt. It checks all the boxes. Plus, it’s spot-on with its depiction of Southern life.
Those hair salon scenes? PERFECTION.
Trust me, I would know. Mamaw saw the same hairdresser for years—a sweet lady who ran a little salon out of the back of her house in Cruso. When she closed up shop, Mamaw was heartbroken.
It was a feeling we shared.
I spent countless afternoons in that cozy space, listening to the ladies gossip, swap recipes, and giggle while perms set and waxes worked their magic. It was as much a social hub as a beauty parlor — and very similar to Truvy’s Salon from the movie.
Those experiences taught me two things:
- Regular salon appointments are not only about looking pretty; they’re good for the soul.
- Finding the right stylist is as crucial as finding the right church.
It took me a while, but nearly two decades ago, I found my own Truvy Jones.
Ain’t she cute? That’s Ramsey.
An old coworker introduced me to Ramsey not long after Belle was born. I can’t even remember that girl’s name anymore, but Ramsey? Ramsey became one of my absolute favorite people. She gave Belle her very first haircut, and she’s stood by me—literally and figuratively—through some of the toughest times of my life, all while standing behind a salon chair.
I love her so much that I’ve followed her to five different salons across two cities. Wherever she goes, her salons always have the same laid-back vibe—a place where you can relax, laugh, vent, or cry and leave feeling like a million bucks.
Her current salon is Fluid in Wilmington. How homey is it? They have a dog who greets everyone at the front door.
Every visit reminds me that the best stylists aren’t just hairdressers—they’re therapists, friends, and sometimes even family. Ramsey’s one of those rare women who can fix your hair and your heart, in a single appointment.
And just like Truvy, she does it all with a Southern accent.
Congratulations Ramsey. Still miss you.
