Meet Cassie

Hey there! I’m Cassie Clark, a Carolina girl who grew up in two towns on opposite sides of North Carolina. My family has lived here for 8 generations, so my love for my home state is something I got honest. I’m passionate about sharing all the things that make North Carolina living so sweet – the history, the great outdoors, the culture, and the laidback lifestyle. That’s what Where the Dogwood Blooms is all about. It’s my love song to life in the Old North State; an ode to sunshine & hurricanes.

Among the artifacts present at Moores Creek Nation Among the artifacts present at Moores Creek National Battlefield is a 1760 half-pound swivel gun.

The swivel gun was a small cannon that rotated on a fixed base. It was one of the only 18th century guns that wasn’t a crew-serviced weapon. 💫

In New Hanover County, across the river from Wilmi In New Hanover County, across the river from Wilmington lies a forgotten pauper cemetery. 🪦

Oak Grove Cemetery once stood off present day 17th Street near the Department of Social Services. The county’s poor were buried there - both black and white; most without tombstones. Wooden markers, seashells, and even bed frames marked burial sites.

When the city decided to extend 16th and 17th Streets, the cemetery was moved across the river to Flemington near the landfill. Historian Bill Reeves and others claimed the bodies were left behind & only the tombstones were moved.

Today, the original Oak Grove site is an abandoned wooded lot - while the newer Flemington stands behind a locked gate.

My maternal great grandfather is buried in Oak Grove, alongside three of his children. Sadly, we don’t know where their bodies truly lie. 🥺

Completed in 1969, the Cape Fear Memorial bridge s Completed in 1969, the Cape Fear Memorial bridge spans the Cape Fear River, connecting Wilmington to US 17, US 76, and US 421. 💫

Without major repairs or a replacement, the bridge will not be able to withstand the expected increase of traffic that will come in the next decade. 🥺

The range of American elk once included the Easter The range of American elk once included the Eastern US. Unfortunately, they were extirpated from North Carolina by 1800 - and from the Eastern US before the 1880s.

200 years later, a herd of 57 was reintroduced to WNC. Today, more than 200 roam the Great Smokies.
