Filming in Georgia

Over the past few weeks, people have started asking for my autograph, and I’ve got to say—it’s the strangest thing! I mean, I’m just a girl who grew up in trailer parks, so why would anyone want my John Hancock? Even Mama’s taken to telling folks I’m “famous,” which always makes me giggle.

But really, why? Why the sudden interest in a headshot of the NC Queen?

I reckon it’s because I’ve been making a bit of a name for myself. What started with the blog led to the podcast, which sparked newspaper articles and radio interviews, and somehow, that caught the attention of producers and directors.

Everything’s happened so fast, I haven’t even had time to fully wrap my head around it.

Earlier this summer, a director reached out and asked me to shoot a trailer with him. We filmed it in Fayetteville over the course of a few hours, and when he left, I figured that was that.

But it wasn’t.

Turns out, his inner circle loved the trailer and wanted more. So off I went to Georgia to film a full-blown pilot.

Everyone’s been asking what it was like filming in Georgia, and what we got up to while we were there. So, for all you curious folks, I threw together a little itinerary down below.

Filming in Georgia

On the Road Again

The girls and I hit the road early, made a pit stop at Buc-ee’s for gas, had breakfast at Waffle House, and—just because I couldn’t resist—I snagged my new favorite ball cap at a truck stop.

After dropping Belle off with her best friend in Columbus, Bug and I made our way to Plains.

Plains, Georgia

Plains, Georgia, is the most adorable little Southern town you could ever lay eyes on. The whole place feels like a living museum dedicated to President Jimmy Carter. We toured his childhood home, his old election headquarters, and even the high school he went to. I was completely captivated and wished there were more towns with that kind of charm and history.

Once we’d soaked up enough of Plains, we headed to Merry Acres Inn in Albany, Georgia, to settle in for the night.

Merry Acres Inn

Merry Acres Inn is absolutely precious, y’all! During the day, a flock of chickens casually roams the parking lot, adding such a charming, rustic touch. And of the evening, the inn opens up a cozy, full-service bar—perfect for anyone looking to unwind after a long day.

The rooms were adorable, with classic wooden bed frames, striped bedding, and beautiful hardwood floors. It had that perfect mix of vintage charm and comfort. Honestly, it’s one of the best places I’ve ever stayed!

River Pointe Golf Course

The next morning was a whirlwind as we rushed to get me camera-ready. Hair and makeup took a bit longer than expected—I’m no pro!—but we finally pulled it together.

Then we headed to River Pointe Golf Course for filming. We arrived early enough to enjoy a delicious breakfast in the clubhouse, and let me tell you, their biscuits and gravy were amazing!

We spent more time filming at the golf course than at any of the other locations, partly because I had a lot to learn. Things like keeping my head up, smiling naturally—those little things that make a big difference on camera.

My favorite part of the day, though, was the golf course dog. She just roamed the clubhouse, soaking up love from all the visitors. Absolutely stole my heart!

G & M Antiques

Next, we made our way to G&M Antiques, and let me tell you, that place is massive—spanning two entire floors and packed with treasures. They have a little bit of everything! We found records, comic books, vintage toys, furniture, décor, and even some beautiful old dishes. Brandon’s lucky I didn’t come home with a full collection of antique Ball Mason jars!

Bug, on the other hand, set her sights on a deer skull for her room. The owners were so sweet—they ended up giving it to her for free!

DJ Thomas Smoked BBQ

By then, the whole crew was starving, so we made a pit stop at DJ Thomas Smoked BBQ for lunch.

Now, does Georgia BBQ hold up to North Carolina standards? Yes, it sure does! Their smoked pork was to die for, and everything—from the BBQ to the sides to the Brunswick Stew—was absolutely delicious. I ate until I was about ready to burst.

I also tried Crystal Hot Sauce for the first time. It’s not Texas Pete, but I’ll admit, it’s a solid second place.

And if you ever swing by, do yourself a favor and try their homemade pork rinds—they were downright perfect!

Ray Charles Plaza

After lunch, we made our way to Ray Charles Plaza, and let me tell you, it’s a fitting tribute to the legend. Ray Charles was born in Albany, Georgia, and they’ve done an incredible job honoring him. The plaza plays his music on a loop, creating the perfect atmosphere, and the piano key walkway is such a cool touch.

I was absolutely obsessed!

Riverquarium

We wrapped up filming at the Riverquarim, where I encountered a fascinating slithery friend and spotted freshwater fish that were even larger than Axl!

Columbus, Georgia

Once we said our goodbyes, we returned to Columbus to pick up Belle and find me a t-shirt. The morning was cool, but by the end of the day, I was sweating.

And that was it. We hopped back on the road and headed home to Brandon to fill him in on our adventure.

Has the show been picked up? I wish I knew! Right now, the scenes are being edited and pieced together. After that, the director will take the finished episode to his production company to explore potential funding.

I’m both excited and nervous. I would love to see this project come to fruition. However, even if it doesn’t, I’ve had the opportunity to experience something that less than 1% of the world’s population will ever get to do.

In the end, I feel blessed, no matter what happens.
